How Tilton School Builds Belonging by Design to Start the School Year

The start of a new year is always exciting at Tilton School. It also brings a lot of change and uncertainty for students. For Tilton students, whether this is their first year in a boarding school environment or they are returning for another year on the Hill, our students thrive because they are known, supported, and challenged by design. In our intentionally small community, we build belonging with intention from the very first day.

The Power of a Small School

One of the greatest strengths of a small boarding and day school is its close-knit environment. Our small average class size of 11 students allows faculty members to know each student as a whole person, not just a name on a roster. This personalized attention helps students feel valued in a way that is only possible in a small school. At Tilton, we build an orientation program that eases students into their academic schedule and allows relationships to form — in classrooms and also in weekly advisory and dorm meetings, athletics, and club activities. This gives students the confidence to step into challenges from day one. A small boarding school community offers the best of both worlds: the structure of school life and the care of a family-like setting.

Traditions That Create Connection

Belonging starts with shared experiences. From orientation activities and dorm bonding events to advisory group traditions and affinity spaces, new students are welcomed and encouraged to reach out into the community from the start. Tilton also hosts a Community Dinner during the first week of school where boarding and day students gather together in their advisory groups. These traditions create a sense of continuity, help students build friendships, and allow them to see themselves as part of something larger.

Personalized Support from Faculty and Advisors

At Tilton School, every student has a support system. That support is backed up by a schedule that builds time for regular advisory meetings, club and affinity group meetings, office hours with faculty, and all-school gatherings. Advisors, teachers, and coaches — along with our full-time School Counselor — check in regularly, guiding students through academic, social, and personal transitions. During the start of the year, faculty members also get to know each student’s individual learning style so we can offer support that is personalized and dynamic. In addition to office hours and extra help, we also offer customized academic support in the Center for Academic Achievement. This personalized mentoring is a key way that boarding schools support students in their growth. Tilton students quickly learn that there are adults who know them, care about them, and are ready to challenge them to do their best.

Building Friendships Across Dorm and Day Life

With a 25% day student population, Tilton School’s residential and community life program ensures that all students — day or boarding — feel welcome and included. Day students are encouraged to attend evening and weekend activities and are also assigned to a dorm so they may participate in the residential experience whenever possible. Additionally, there are several opportunities for local families to connect with one another and play a role in various school events, especially team dinners and our annual Fall Family Weekend.

Partnering with Parents

Parents are an essential part of the community. As soon as the school year kicks off, families receive a weekly newsletter with school news, photos, volunteer opportunities, and other important information. Families also have regular communication and updates from their student’s advisor, and this relationship becomes a crucial pillar of their “Team Tilton” — a dedicated team of adults for each student. During Fall Family Weekend, families also have a chance to meet with their advisor in person and engage in a student-led conference.

Belonging Leads to Success

When students feel that they belong, they are more willing to take risks, try new things, and pursue their goals. That’s why we design the opening of school experience (and beyond) with this intention at the center of every program and event.
